Identifying Potential Risks Through Material Characterization Reports

Identifying Potential Risks Through Material Characterization Reports

Challenge

Incitec Pivot Ltd. (IPL) engaged Okane Consultants to conduct a material characterization report on the mine rock and tailings materials at the Phosphate Hill mining operation. The purpose of this characterization study was to develop a report that is built on initial waste characterization assessments, using the results of a recently completed sampling and analysis campaign. The characterization of materials was also developed to meet the Queensland Government's Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan Guidelines.

Approach

Okane developed a characterization report to provide a clear assessment of the waste streams encountered (or to be mined) at Phosphate Hill. The report used information and data collected by IPL in 2019 that included testing of geochemical and geotechnical samples of the mine rock and tailings material, per Okane’s recommendation. Each waste stream’s potential reuse, or required management, was made based on field mapping, available volumes, and laboratory results.

Client Benefit

The detailed material characterization report—both geochemical and geotechnical characterization—provided IPL with a robust knowledge base of the waste materials and potential risks for Phosphate Hill. Okane also provided IPL with recommendations for managing the potential risks and defined which materials could be used for rehabilitation.
